Definitely! Vertica is an "analytics" database, but it's based on data warehousing concepts. Vertica is designed to work best with star schema models. MANY customers use Vertica as their EDW implementation.

Not sure what ALL the reasons are for, but I think it's basically an alternative home directory location for any Vertica-specific user IDs.
