Hey,

This has been bugging me... Does anyone know what the "K" stands for in the term "K-Safe"?

Hi Julie,

Vertica uses K because it is the first letter of my last name  Ha Hah!

Actually, here's why I think they used K:

A Vertica database is said to be K-safe if any node can fail at any given time without causing the database to shut down. When I first started working with Vertica I wondered why they didn't use N-Safe, where the N can be derived from the word Node. I found out later that as a matter of convention in mathematics, K is used to represent a constant scaling value. What happens when we add nodes to a Vertica cluster? We are "scaling" it horizontally... hence the use of K.

I'm not sure about that, though.

Anyone else have a guess?
